Meet 2025 College Vice Captain Elize Tom

Why did you apply to be a College captain?
To be in a leadership role has been one of my dreams since Year 7. Throughout my high school journey, I've come across past student leaders who have represented the school with pride and integrity. In them, I saw resilience, courage, and commitment, which I believe I can pursue in my leadership role. But more than that, I saw a sense of respect and passion. These leaders not only have inspired me, but also helped me to realise that I can be more. Over the past few years, I have acquired many valuable skills through participating in various extracurricular activities and school events. These have empowered me to gain confidence in everything I do. When I got this leadership application, I knew it was worth a shot. I wanted to give back to the community by upholding the core values of our College and making a positive experience for our Mercy Girls. I have a strong passion for St Saviour's College and I want to create a legacy and expand connections with the school community and others.
What do you imagine the role to be?
I believe being a College Vice-Captain will come with responsibilities such as organising school functions, setting a positive example for peers, respecting and valuing my peers and teachers, collaborating with others, and representing the school within the college and within the broader community. However, the main part of my job will be to strengthen student advocacy - being a strong voice of my school.
What do you hope to achieve?
As a leader, I hope to create an inclusive environment, inspire all those around me and foster true mercy spirit. I also want to hone my leadership abilities to enhance student participation in all school events.
What do you think some of the challenges will be?
Taking this leadership role will bring challenges such as balancing responsibilities, prioritising study, meeting the expectations of others within the school and being flexible. However, through a year-long dedication, I am certain that I can tackle these obstacles.
What are the skills/attributes that you’ll bring to the role?
The key skills I will bring to this role are:
- Communication - collaborating with team members
- Inclusivity - engaging peers to be a part of the college
- Problem solving abilities - always having a plan b when things don’t go right
- Teamwork - working productively with team members through expressing ideas and paying attention to their suggestions
- Resilience - having a positive mindset and never giving up
- Commitment - taking the ability to show up to events
- Time management - prioritising tasks effectively
- Integrity - respecting others/helping those in need
How do you want to feel about the role at the end of 2025?
At the end of 2025 I want to feel proud. A thriving moment of happiness and success is what any leader could possibly get after a whole year of unforgettable memories. As Catherine McAuley said, “we must strive to do ordinary things extraordinarily well”. I believe that by taking up this role, I can make a positive impact following the footsteps of our role model, Catherine McAuley.
